Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation (VCA) Transplants
VCA is the most advanced form of transplantation. While traditional transplantation deals with individual organs, VCA deals with complete anatomical structures; hands, arms, uterus, and face. As you learn about VCA transplants, consider that they include all the techniques such as blood flow, ligament, muscle, tendon, rejection and nerve connection procedures that would be required to transplant the head. As far out as that may seem, it is on the horizon.
Hands – John Hopkins University has a comprehensive hand transplant program. They report over 100 such procedures have been performed.
Forearms and Hands – Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia performed a bilateral (both) hands transplant in 2015. Zion was only a few years old at the time. Here is how they do it!
Uterus – living donor uterus transplants are no longer in the trail phase. Baylor University Medical Center is the first transplant program in the world to offer uterus transplants outside of a clinical trial. We have the only program in the United States to deliver babies using uteri from both living and deceased donors and the first uterus transplant program in the nation to successfully deliver two babies from one transplanted uterus.
Face – Once again we have John Hopkins at the forefront. Real life story of Joe DiMeo Here how they do it!
